International Feature

Writing speaks to readers, of course, but writing also speaks to other writing – whether or not the writers are familiar with one another’s work.  But “speak” is a pretty boring and usual word, and this interaction is not confined just to writing. Werner Herzog said it better: “I don’t think my films speak with David Lynch’s films so much as they dance together.”

This issue, BathHouse wanted to spotlight the hybrid scene in several Eastern European countries, but we received submissions that both danced together and danced around lines on the map.  A literary journal itself is a kind of polyphony, but several of this issue’s artists also distill a rich vocal layering in their individual pieces, especially the sound poems by Oana Avasilichioaei and Rachel Zucker, and the art that inspired Zucker’s work, Sebastian Mendes’ testimonial show There is a Mirror in My Heart

Our original intentions were frustrated – or let’s say transcended – in the best possible way, just as 8.2’s artists transcend what the world tries to convince us is entertainment.
